I regularly get questions about how often things should be washed in the washing machine. For example, I recommend washing bed linen at least every two weeks, or weekly if you perspire a lot.
Pillows and duvets absorb quite a bit of perspiration and are therefore an attractive place for dust mites. Washing every six months, preferably at sixty degrees, is therefore no superfluous luxury. If you use a pillow protector (molton) under the pillowcase, you can wash it monthly and the pillow annually.
The towels in the bathroom can be used two to three times before washing them. Hang them to dry in between. Washcloths should be washed after one use.
Dishcloths can contain a lot of bacteria, especially when they have been wet on the countertop. Change the cloth daily, dry it on a rack and throw it in the laundry basket. Tea towels can last for two to three days, provided they are dried well after use.
You should wash new clothes, towels and bed linen before using for the first time.
