Car editor Niek Schenk: ,, In the cramped and overcrowded Netherlands, car traffic quickly gets under pressure. Rijkswaterstaat investigates every five years whether any adjustments to overtaking bans for trucks are necessary. That happened last year. An overtaking ban is mainly introduced on motorway sections with two lanes in one direction of travel. If local traffic is generally quiet, Rijkswaterstaat considers an overtaking ban unnecessary and inconvenient. On the other hand, if it is very busy on the route, an overtaking prohibition in the right-hand lane can create columns of trucks. They then drive dangerously close to each other, other cars have difficulty interfering and that leads to unsafe situations. In short, Rijkswaterstaat is apparently struggling with a complicated problem. ”
