If wallpaper is removed properly, you can apply a new wallpaper on that same wall. Pasting the wallpaper over the previous one is not a good idea, because then there is a good chance that the new wallpaper will come off.
It is important to look at the substrate. “There are many types, but you only have to distinguish between paper and non-woven wallpaper for the surface,” tips professional wallpaper designer Ilona Voets. “The type of substrate is stated on the label of the roll. Chances are you no longer have that label, but you can check it by tearing off a piece of the wallpaper. ”
If you see small fibers during tearing, then you know that you are dealing with non-woven wallpaper. “This is the easiest to remove. You can pull it off the wall line by line. ” Optionally, you can poke behind a corner with a putty knife to get started. Make sure you do this carefully.
“Non-woven paper is applied dry to the wall, so that only the adhesive underlay has come into contact with the wall. That is why non-woven paper stays very nice on the wall after a number of years. ”
If you do not see any fibers during tearing, then it concerns paper wallpaper, which is a lot more difficult. You need a lot of water for this. It is therefore good to cover the floor, furniture and any electricity when you get started.
The first option for removing paper wallpaper is steaming. “The disadvantage is that you wet the wall vigorously and damage it more quickly.”
According to Voets, a better solution is to use wallpaper fabric, which is available in bottles at the paint shop. “It is important that you use warm water. Then pour the mixture into a plant spray and moisten the wall a few times. This makes it easier to remove the wallpaper. ”
If the paper wallpaper has a vinyl top layer, you can use a wallpaper stick. With this roller with dots you make small holes in the wallpaper beforehand so that the remover can penetrate and do its work.
Afterwards, wash the wall with wall cleaner and sand it lightly again if necessary. The smoother the wall, the better your new wallpaper will look.
