The popular TikTok app will remain available for download in America for the time being. Apple and Google do not have to remove the judge’s app from their US stores, something President Trump wanted as of today.
TikTok argued before a judge in Washington on Sunday that a download ban is illegal. TikTok’s lawyer also stated that such a ban would cause enormous and unnecessary damage to the company. The judge agreed. At the same time, the judge turned down a request from TikTok to end a blanket ban on the app from November 12.
In a response to the NOS, TikTok Netherlands announced that it was happy with the court’s decision. “We will continue to defend our rights on behalf of our community and employees. At the same time, we will also continue our ongoing dialogue with the government to translate our proposal provisionally approved by the president last weekend into an agreement.”
Battle for TikTok
The future of TikTok in the US has been a fierce battle for months. The app is Chinese-made and is seen by Trump as a security risk. He fears that data from US users will be shared with the Chinese government. TikTok contradicts that.
Trump is demanding that TikTok’s US operations be transferred to an American company. Parent company ByteDance has already signed a deal about this with software giant Oracle and supermarket chain Walmart. It has yet to be approved by authorities in the US and China.
The app is the first to be made in China with great success in the West. TikTok has about 100 million users in both America and Europe. The download ban would only have applied to the US.
