Taxi delivery app Uber may continue to offer its services in London. A judge has decided that on appeal. In November 2019, Transport for London decided, the UK capital’s transportation authority that Uber’s license would not be renewed.
According to the authority, there was a lack of control of drivers. For example, unauthorized drivers could upload their photo to the account of authorized Uber drivers and drive around illegally.
Uber appealed that decision and in the meantime, the company was allowed to continue operating in London. The judge now says that Uber has taken sufficient measures and therefore deserves a license. The court has yet to decide for how long that permit will be valid.
Dragging case
London is one of the most important markets for Uber. About 45,000 drivers use the app. There has been fussing between Uber and the London authorities for some time. In 2017, the company temporarily lost its license because it “shows a lack of responsibility, which has implications for the safety of the public”.
Uber drivers would then be responsible for, among other things, an increase in the number of accidents.
