Manchester United has started the Champions League season with a surprising win against Paris Saint-Germain. With Donny van de Beek as a substitute, the losing finalist of last season was beaten 1-2 on Tuesday.
The winning goal was scored three minutes before time by Marcus Rashford. He pushed the ball into the far corner on a pass from Paul Pogba. Van de Beek only came on the field a minute after the 1-2.
Manchester United took the lead for the first time halfway through the first half. Bruno Fernandes saw his penalty initially turned by Keylor Navas, but was lucky that the goalkeeper had come off his line too soon. In the second chance, the Portuguese still hit.
Anthony Martial unintentionally scored the tying run ten minutes after the break. The attacker tried to clear a corner from Neymar, but headed the ball into the roof of his own goal.
PSG went in search of the winner, but always found David de Gea on his way. In the end, it was Rashford who, just like two seasons ago in the eighth finals, gave United the win in Paris.
RB Leipzig was 2-0 too strong for Istanbul Basaksehir in the other match in group H. The leading role was for former PSV player Angeliño, who scored both goals between the fifteenth and twentieth minute. The 1-0, in which he eliminated defender Martin Skrtel with an inimitable move, was the highlight of the match.
Justin Kluivert made his Champions League debut for Leipzig. The attacker hired from AS Roma came in twenty minutes before time.
In group E, all clubs are at one point after the first round. Chelsea-Sevilla ended goalless, Stade Rennes and FC Krasnodar finished 1-1.
