The Because the Night presentation consists of two works. Light and sound artist Boris Acket (1988), known for his light works at DGTL Festival, creates the light work ‘BAKEN’. In a rudderless time with no dot on the horizon, this installation, created in collaboration with Chris van Meer, Lumus Instruments, Ampco Flashlight, Think! AV & Van Ham Tenten en Podia, a little sigh of relief, a sign of life. The light ‘beats’ gently in the rhythm of a heartbeat, like a lighthouse. Anyone who watches the work from a distance can perceive the heartbeat without hearing it. For example, the work emphasizes the deafening silence of ADE 2020 and literally and figuratively supports the night and festival sector and all Amsterdammers. The work is intended as a calming dot on the horizon – which can be seen from different places – but whoever experiences ‘BAKEN’ up close can actually hear the heart beat softly. The heartbeat is built especially for ADE from the kicks (bass drums) of the most commonly used drum computers in dance music.
Because the Night’s second work is by light artist Vladimir Grafov (1964) included in his installation Invincible Sun lasers were used to create an abstract and autonomous interplay of lines on the Y slope where ships used to roll into the IJ. The laser lights, inseparable from the atmosphere and decor of dance parties, form the basis for his work and depict how after sunset daylight gives way to the light of the night. Grafov combines science and technology in his work to arrive at new experiences in the field of form, color and sound.
