The big cycling races are back on the calendar: this weekend Liège-Bastogne-Liège, next month the Giro d’Italia and in July of course the Tour de France. So Nol van ‘t Wiel from Woerden asks for a spot in the newspaper for his very special, fifty-year-old water bottle.
“A drinking bottle of the Willem II-Gazelle cycling team that caused a furore in the Netherlands and abroad in the 1960s. Led by Ton Vissers, riders such as Peter Post, Rik van Looy, Jo de Roo and Rini Wagtmans ensured the necessary successes. ”
Nol, pure cycling enthusiast, attended professional rounds very regularly in those years together with his brother Adriaan. This is also the case for the Profronde of Valkenswaard. “In those years, Valkenswaard was the home of the cigar and bicycle team and the team was present with a good number of riders. Scoring a water bottle was no problem. ”
That special drinking bottle, with the Willem II logo on one side and the Gazelle logo on the other, has a prominent place in his office. In this way he is daily reminded of that special cycling team with special riders. “If someone asks me, ‘Is that water bottle for sale?’ The answer is, no gold, it will not go out.”
It will come as no surprise to anyone that Nol is a real cycling fanatic. For years he wrote a real ‘cycling poem’ every week for the blog of cycling historian and writer Fred van Slogteren. Also about his own, special water bottle: “Unused, a beautiful specimen, I got from Jo de Roo or was it Herman van Loo, as a thank you for my help in Valkenswaar (d).”
