On 8 and 9 May, op Texel again the Wadden Bird Festival, organized by the Bird Information Center Texel and the National Park Dunes of Texel.
This year, an adjusted program draws attention to endangered field birds. During the Texel Big Day on 8 May, where teams try to see a record of birds, this year it is possible to participate from all over the country.
This year bird watchers do not necessarily have to travel to Texel to count birds, because the Texel Big Day is national this year.
One or more teams can participate in a favorite area of your choice. In addition, you can also participate from home with the Home Edition: a Big Day from your own home and garden.
This is possible for at least half an hour, but also for the full 24 hours in teams of a maximum of four other bird lovers. The team with the most bird species within 24 hours wins the main prize: a weekend on Texel.
With all activities, money is collected for the field birds, such as the hen harrier, partridge and skylark. Due to the development of agriculture, habitats along fields, such as hedgerows, rows of trees or small groves, are disappearing. As a result, the field birds have a difficult time and are almost all on the Red List.
The Texel Big Day is the start of the National Bird Week, organized by Bird Protection Netherlands.
