The next big festival that will end again is Roskilde. The festival in Denmark should have taken place this year from June 26 to July 3. Unfortunately, it is announced today that the Danish government is banning major events and festivals. This has the logical consequence that Roskilde cannot continue for the second time in a row.
Festival director Signe Lopdrup explains: Unfortunately, the cancellation doesn’t come as a surprise. But it’s a very sad situation, and we’re devastated by the fact that we can’t meet again at our festival and contribute to recreating the communities that the corona crisis has destroyed for so many. That is needed right now. The cancellation is very serious for our charity society and a severe blow to the growth segment of culture and the ‘food chain’ that helps create the festival. “
This year’s program included The Strokes, Faith no More, Kendrick Lamar and Deftones. Thom Yorke had previously canceled his entire tour himself.
People in possession of a ticket for Roskilde 2021 (or 2020) can take it with them to the next edition, hopefully in 2022. Roskilde Festival 2021 was completely sold out. In Denmark there is a guarantee fund for festivals that cannot take place due to corona. Lopdrup says about this:
When the festival was canceled last year, we never dreamed that we would not be ready for a festival summer in 2021. It takes at least a year and a half to plan a festival, and although we have planned with great care and financial responsibility , we have had expenses and obligations for the operation, the organization and external suppliers. Therefore, it is a relief that we can get help to get through another canceled season. “
Roskilde has not yet announced which dates the festival will take place next year, but the week of June 25 to July 2, 2022 seems likely.
