According to the association, these people should be supported with an appropriate isolation policy and a good ‘National Isolation Programme’.
“It is important that new incentives are introduced,” says Maud Weide of VEH. “Pay out insulation subsidy in advance and a voucher for homes with a low energy label is also very effective.”
Nearly sixty percent of homeowners say they can and want to insulate their home with a subsidy in advance. A €2,000 voucher for homeowners with energy label D and below could mean that 55 percent of homeowners who want to insulate can do so. Even a quarter of homeowners who now say they do not want to insulate will consider this with both measures.
What are the most adequate ways to insulate? Since warm air rises, the roof is one of the things that can be dealt with fairly easily. Pitched and flat roofs can be insulated on the inside as well as the outside. The inside is also easy to do for a do-it-yourselfer, for example with glass and rock wool and polystyrene foam.
With vapor barrier foil, moist air from the house can be prevented from condensing into the insulation layer and causing wood rot. Can be finished with plasterboard. There are also ready-made insulation boards for sale. Insulating the roof on the outside is a major job that requires a professional.
After the roof, the cavity can be tackled, the space between the outer and inner wall. Most houses built after 1920 have such a cavity wall. From the 1970s, houses have been delivered with an insulated cavity.
Insulation can be done by filling the cavity with glass or rock wool, foam or squeaky balls. To this end, holes are drilled in the joints of the outer wall. This is also a job for a professional. For a terraced house that quickly costs 800 euros, for a corner/semi-detached house about 2100 euros, while a detached house can come to 3100 euros. There is of course an annual energy saving in return.
Another important energy-saving measure is insulation of the underside of the floor on the ground floor. This can be done with mineral wool insulation boards or plastic insulation boards such as tempex or with foil insulation or sprayed insulation foam. With a wooden floor, the material is applied between the floor beams, with a concrete floor it can be fixed or glued with pins.
Finally, install HR insulating glass in windows and doors. Besides the fact that insulation is good for the environment because of the energy savings in the long term, it has another advantage. It will be a comfortable house without drafts, moisture or cold; like a warm coat.
