A Christmas tree full of lights, a string of lights in front of the window, flashing lights on the outside wall: the Christmas period is pleasant, but the energy meter is skyrocketing. Especially the older Christmas lights consume the necessary power.
With a Christmas tree with a cord of 20 light bulbs (power 25W), a Christmas star with a light bulb (25W) and 100 lights (25W) outside in a tree and a 10 meter long light hose (160W), 170 kWh will be consumed during the Christmas month. For example, the energy bill for that month can be about 35 euros more expensive with a burning time of six hours, MilieuCentraal calculated. That can put pressure on the budget of the already expensive holiday season.
Fortunately, the costs are easy to bring down. First, by considering whether it is necessary to decorate the entire house from the outside while sitting inside most of the time. A simple way of saving is by omitting such lighting.
For other ways of saving, a small investment must first be made. This is mainly due to the replacement of incandescent lamps with LED lighting. This way of lighting is 6 to 9 times more economical. They last longer and count Christmas incandescent lights 10 to 20 watts, LED lighting – nowadays standard in garden centers – 1 to 5 watts per light.
Also an easy way to save is to use a timer, so that the Christmas tree does not shine when no one is home or awake. A general timer is available for about 5 euros, but there is also Christmas lighting with its own timer for sale, with starting costs about 6 euros for a cord with 24 lights.
By only switching on the Christmas lights in the evening, you can easily save ten euros, according to energieprijsbereken.nl. Also check whether the Christmas lights are fitted with a transformer, often present in low voltage lighting. Such a transformer also consumes power when the lighting is switched off. Then it is better to remove the plug from the socket.
If you look at the environment in addition to your wallet, you can also opt for solar-powered light cords for outdoor activities: a 10-meter long LED cord with solar panel is already available for 10 euros. Now the sun!
