Novak Djokovic also has to miss the Miami Masters tournament. The 35-year-old Serb is still not allowed to enter the United States because he has not been vaccinated against COVID-19.
“We tried to make an exception for Djokovic, but it was not possible,” said tournament director James Blake tennis channel.
“We did everything we could. We tried to talk to the government because it was not up to us. We are one of the biggest tournaments in the world and we want to have the best players.”
35-year-old Djokovic also missed Indian Wells, which will experience its denouement this weekend. If Carlos Alcaraz wins that tournament, the nineteen-year-old Spaniard will take over the top spot in the ATP ranking from the Serb. Alcaraz will meet the Italian Jannik Sinner in the semifinals on Saturday.
Djokovic will return to action in Monte Carlo
At the beginning of this year, Djokovic was welcome again at the Australian Open, after he was expelled from Australia last year due to his unvaccinated status. Djokovic triumphed in Melbourne and now has 22 Grand Slam victories, a record he shares with Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic will make his appearance again in the second week of April at the Monte Carlo Masters tournament.
In contrast to Djokovic, Botic van de Zandschulp will participate in Miami, while Tallon Greek track has returned home to prepare for the clay court season.
